Her Songs
A global female collective of producers, songwriters and artists
Women have long been underrepresented in the music industry. In 2018, only 17% of top 100 songs featured female artists, just 2% of producers were women, and roughly 9% of Grammy nominees were female.
Her Songs was created to change that by inviting viewers behind the scenes, as women from different corners of the world come together to write, record and produce records from scratch. A celebration of collaboration over competition and a spotlight on female excellence.
Part I – Los Angeles
The first record was recorded in an Airbnb in Los Angeles. Four songs written and produced in four days by Danish singer Marie Dahlstrøm, Colombian-American singer Dani Murcia, Kiwi guitarist Emily C Browning, French songwriter Francesca "The Naked Eye" Hole, and Canadian bass player and producer Maddie Jay.
In addition to the record, we also produced behind-the-scenes videos for each song, a live session, and a no-budget music video — all shared on Instagram, taking the project from 0 to 10k followers before everyone returned to their corners of the world one week later.
The Los Angeles visuals was graded with an exaggerated teal & orange colour palette to emphasize a strong California aesthetic, while subtly nodding to the commercial "same old" Hollywood look that Her Songs is a commentary on.
This aesthetic was also reflected on the artwork, which was pressed in limited edition vinyl, which sold out all 100 copies immediately. The album is available on all streaming platforms.
The four tracks from Her Songs Los Angeles touch on themes of inclusion and empowerment while drawing on the different soulful styles of the artists.
A short live recording of the first track — Holding My Own — was picked up by @pickupmusic, which really made the project blow up, gathering more than 300k views. The comment section made it clear that the idea resonated. Not only did it result in a great album, it also inspired other artists, many of whom requested to join the collective for future collaborations.
Part II – Toronto
In 2019, a new Her Songs project set out in Toronto, this time joined by London multi-instrumentalist and producer Emmavie. New city. New Airbnb. New aesthetic and new energy. Toronto feels denser and grittier than Los Angeles, and the visuals needed to reflect that — a perfect fit with the new member and her bouncy approach to beatmaking.
The second round was twice as long as the first, resulting in 8 tracks split into two EPs – once again bringing the audience along with behind-the-scenes footage and live sessions shared on the day of recording.
The project also included a music video shot at a local roller disco for the single 4AM Disco.
The week closed with a live concert at Ildsjel in Toronto — performing the unreleased songs written just days earlier alongside tracks from the Los Angeles EP.
